GMail account hacking: watch out for spam!

Recently, the world’s most popular email service Google Mail with its two billion active users, has observed a spam campaign that targets its users.

As you certainly know, Google is known for the effectiveness of its antispam filter. The problem is that these times things manage to become much more complex for the American giant. Especially after a decision that consists in now authorizing emails of political origin particularly during campaigns.

One can therefore understand that the public has not really appreciated this turn of things, particularly coming from the American giant.

“Google’s intention to allow emails coming from political campaigns to bypass the anti-spam filter of GMail. The decision has been welcomed with widespread public contempt. Yet, Google has persisted, and now the Federal Election Commission (FEC) has voted 4-1 to give the green light to the company. And the implications for all GMail users are important.”, explains the report of Axios.

Google has been delighted by the fact that the Federal Election Commission has validated its intention to launch this pilot program on users, it remains nonetheless that on social networks the American giant has been strongly criticized.

“There are several key talking points here. In the short term, this decision is likely to open the floodgates to many more political campaign emails. The parties will know that they pass by default, and all attempts of users to block the sender can be easily bypassed by sending them from a new address.”, notes Violette Laurent, journalist.

The problem here resides essentially in the precedent that this will create. If in this context it does not pose a problem, this still means that Google will potentially have the right to create exemptions for other domains and other sectors. For example, like to favor certain paid partnerships. Something that can have as a consequence to destroy even what has made the success of Google Mail.

To the question of knowing for what reason Google decides to risk the credibility of Google Mail in this situation, the American giant has affirmed that its objective is to be as politically neutral as possible. This latter has even signified that it is possible for the user to selectively block the content of the arrangement.

Faced with the grousing, the American giant has declared: “We will continue to monitor the comments as the pilot project is deployed to ensure that it reaches its objectives.”.

For Violette Laurent: “Given the general outcry the last time that GMail underwent a brief failure of the anti-spam filter, I believe that Google is playing with fire, and pacifying political parties at the expense of your user base rarely ends well. The Pandora’s box is open.”.
